SOLAR POWER GROWS IN GEORGIA

With the Advanced Solar Initiative, Georgia Power put Georgia at the forefront of the solar revolution in the United States.  Being named the state with the fastest amount of solar being added since its beginning. This initiative has committed to adding 80% as much solar onto the electrical grid in Georgia by the end of 2016, as California had on-grid in 2014.  This bold step forward was nocropped-solar-panels.jpgt without conflict.  There was the effort to create a Georgia Solar Utilities in contrast to the existing electrical providers, and much lobbying of the Public Service Commission.  Once there was clear interest by the consumers and some support by several members of the Public Service Commission,  Georgia Power, a branch of the Southern Company, the south’s largest electrical utility,  began to listen to the consumers and decided to take a leading role in solar energy in Georgia.  We are hoping that other Southern Company  power companies, which supply power to several other southern states will do the same.    On November 30, 2015, the City of Atlanta anounced; Solar City Atlanta, an initiative which starts with solar power being installed on 28 city owned buildings, which will act as a catalyst for the promotion of solar power throughout the city.   Mayor Kasim Reed, announced Atlanta, Solar City along with many supporting organizations and personnel, includingsolar-atlanta the fire chief at a press conference at City Hall. The program will use existing state legislation and federal tax credits. Atlanta plans to purchase and install solar panels for  municipal buildings including recreation centers, fire stations and a police station.  The installations will make a difference by creating significant savings on the city’s utility bills, reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and will save approximately 216 million gallons of water by 2030.    President Obama’s Sunshot initiative can become a reality with more cities and large energy users following suit.
